Nights That Start Late

The reservation was for eight-thirty, but nobody really expected dinner before nine.

One woman was still upstairs fixing her eyeliner after saying she was ready twenty minutes ago. Somebody else got stuck downtown because the driver missed the turn twice. There was a half-empty martini sweating onto the bar while people drifted in separately, apologizing without sounding sorry.

Typical American night.
